An Academic Recommendation Letter (Some Tips)

An academic recommendation letter is a document that can make or break your future. You may have been asked to write one, or perhaps you are composing one on behalf of someone who will then sign it. Whatever the case, achieving the best outcome is one reason you are reading this article, yes?
Unfortunately, there's a lot of confusion out there about what to say in this type of reference letter, and how to say it.
First, A little mindset shift
It does not have to take hours and hours. You need not agonize over the details if you keep a few things in mind.
The perfect solution (in 3 parts for writing your academic reference letter)
So here are three tips that will simply the task.
Tip #1 - In an academic recommendation letter, be sure to say how you know the applicant. That creates the context that indicates why you are a credible referee. If, for example, you were that person's instructor, also say for which course it was, when the person took the course, what the course covers, what type of tasks the person would have performed in the course and how the person performed in the course.
Academic recommendation letter Tip #2 - Be clear on the context of the application. What program is the person applying for? Has that person demonstrated an interest/aptitude or passion for the subject? Has he/she done any exceptional or memorable work that you can recall? Are there any class projects that come to mind?
Academic reference Tip #3 - Describe any positive aspects of that person as they relate to his/her goal of getting into graduate school. The school, of course, wants to know why that person will be successful in graduate studies and is a good candidate for that particular program.
Here are some more questions to address: Did he/she participate in class and group? Did he/she make any interesting contributions to the class? Did the student hand in work on time? Did the student produce good quality work? Did he/she demonstrate good critical thinking skills? In answering these questions, you will convey the applicant's suitability for graduate studies, something the is looked at carefully by the school.
Bonus Tip - You can apply to any type of reference or business letter. Be sure your document has a positive tone. Also, do not draw attention to negative traits (we all have things that could be improved upon, but this not the place to memento them). At the same time, avoid being grandiose. If your recommendation letter drips in excessive flattery, it will smack of inauthenticity and turn off your reader.
Yet another tip - As with any business letter, ensure your letter is just one page long; also, don't forget to edit and proofread your work.
